top tier experience
by: TopWhat is being in a “top-tier” like? If it was really not different from “bottom” tier, then it wouldn’t be so competitive to get in so there must be something making it better?

For sororitys, there is a quota set so each chapter can only take so many women. So, the chapters which are considered more selective have first pick of the women they choose. They typically select on looks because that is what makes them pull strong social schedules. (i.e. that is what frats consider "top tier"). That does not mean the women are better friends, more loyal, smarter, interesting etc. It does not mean the Greek experience is better. It only means that they meet a more universal beauty standard. End of story!!
For men, I honestly don't know how they do their membership selection. I know guys that are much hotter in mid tier and even lower tier than some of the "top tier". So, clearly looks are not driving that train. Maybe they value money or connections more.
But, I can tell you that "top tier" is not what defines the Greek experience. You can 100% have a wonderful experience in any chapter on campus.

Frats have so much competition in the top and upper mid tiers. Socialness and looks probably matter, but when it’s that competitive connections are what usually make the difference
