informal sorority rush

by: S.K.

Can someone please explain what "informal" sorority rush (Continuous Open Bidding) is and how it works? I went through Formal Rush last Spring and really had my heart set on one sorority, which, unfortunately did not offer me a bid. They are supposed to do COB this semester, but is it worth it to try again since I never got a bid during Formal? I preffed there and thought I made a positive impression, so I don't know what to think any more. Looking for advice, serious responses only, please. Thanks!

Not all sororities participate in COB so if you know anyone in that chapter I would inquire about whether or not they are. If you can confirm via a sister or through social media that they are having parties, go. It is much more relaxed and casual than what you went through in the spring. If you made it to prefs, they liked you. Every single person invited to prefs is liked enough to receive a bid. At that point, it just comes down to where you fell on their list. If you did not get a bid, you were lower on that list than the number of women they could take. If you did not get a bid, you either SIP'd (listed only one chapter) or got a bid elsewhere and dropped. If you got a bid elsewhere and dropped, you are not eligible for COB. If you SIP'd you should pursue COB because your chances would be very high to receive a bid from them now.

Thank you. The sorority I wanted is listed as participating in COB, so your info is reassuring and helpful.

I would agree with "Panhel". Our chapter is told that we need to check and re-check our pref invite list. Absolutely every woman on the Pref list can become a sister. If there are no objections, it is submitted. If you made it to the Pref list, they loved you. Unfortunately, each chapter is restricted to a certain number of bids. If they invited 100 but can only offer 50 bids, then #51-100 can be out of luck. But, it may have come down to legacies being placed at the top (which is standard) and how many women you know from the chapter. It can literally come down to alphabetical order or GPA for the stack ranking of #51-100. It does not mean they didn't love you. Good luck!

It's very enlightening to see that the discussions between/around sorority questions are MUCH more thoughtful and insightful than those moronic quips on the fraternity threads. This site SHOULD be a great clearing house for questions from would-be Greeks but most of the idiotic responses about "tiers" and the complete lack of empathy for guys going through rush is a disgrace to the PSU IFC.

To @SK, what a kind response. And kind is exactly how I'd characterize the "SK" girls I'd love to see again for COB. 💜

When is it, who is participating, how exactly does it work? Are there certain times? Open houses?

Informal sounds like a much nicer (and more substantive) way to meet people.

The following houses are listed on the Panhel site as doing informal: ADPi, AOPi, DPhiE, Theta, Phi Sig and Sig Kap. Follow their social media for the schedule.
