alcohol and fraternities

by: andy

I know there's a cultural stigma where fraternity brothers have to drink to fit in but do I hurt my chances of getting a bid if I don't drink alcohol?

Absolutely not, well not for the fraternities that are worth pledging anyways. A couple of my brothers don't drink and it doesn't make them any less of a brother. You may be asked to DD all the time but that's about it. Also sober is always a much better look than drunk.

I absolutely agree. The point of rushing is to see which fraternity has values, standards, etc. that correspond the most to your own, so make sure that besides other aspects you might be looking at, you also need to be aware of each fraternity's outlook on drinking/not drinking, and make a choice based on what you believe in (even if it would possibly differ from those of your friends rushing at the same time, for example)

I know of at least one guy in each big frat that doesn't drink. You may feel a bit alienated at times, but no one will hate you for it.

An organization that is in touch with its values will not force you to drink. Such chapters exist here but it is not the case across the board so choose wisely my friend!

No fraternity is going to force you to drink but some people do feel left out at times when everybody is drinking. This comes with being in college not just in a fraternity but trust me you can still have a good time without drinking.
