pref ranking

If I only ranked one house for pref because I knew I wouldn't be happy in the other two I preffed did that drop me to the bottom of the list for the house I ranked?

Yes you should never rank one house after pref or you'll usually get dropped not because they don't want you but because the computer does it

If you only rank one house it automatically puts you at the bottom of the list for all houses.
