nervous for rush

by: PNM

I’m rushing at auburn this fall and i’m very obviously hispanic. I’m really nervous because from a lot of their social medias there isn’t a lot of representation of girls who look like me in their chapters and i’m nervous i’ll be judged based off of this. I’ve grown up in the south my entire life so i’m no stranger to being judged purely because of this but i know that i want to find a sorority at auburn with people who i know will be accepting of me regardless of my race and will want me because of my personality. does anyone have any tips or advice/ experience with this?

The reality of it is everyone is going to get “judged”, right or wrong, in rush. There will be a ton of “cuts” before PNMs even visit the sororities in person. Those continue through the rounds. Honestly, a lot of it for some sororities is who you know that is already in that sorority, so if you don’t have a connection and get cut from a number early don’t take it personal. It isn’t a knock on you. A lot of other people are in the same boat., so you aren’t getting singled out. What you need to do is focus on being yourself and making connections with the girls in the sororities you do visit. Find then girls and sorority you click with the best and join them. There are tons of girls in every chapter, and there will be girls that you don’t get along with or get “judged” by even in the sorority you join. That’s reality. You just have to find a core group to do college with and some of those people will likely not even be the same sorority. It will all work out. Be yourself, find the sorority that best fits you (I promise you will, they are all great) and quit worrying about what you think other people might think about you. Doing that can cause you to miss out on great experience because you are constantly focusing on the negative and what you are worried might happen. Live in the moment and enjoy what actually happens. I promise it will work out.

You must radiate confidence in recruitment. You need to own your very obvious hispanic looks/background. This goes for any girl nervous about whatever makes her self-conscious about her looks/background; you've got to be okay with yourself just as you are, and be like "so what, I've got a lot going for me" so you can loosen up enough to have good, easy conversations and show your personality, even your sense of humor. This is what the members rushing you will remember: OMG she's so cute/OMG she's so sweet/OMG she's so fun/OMG she's so smart and interesting! When have you felt at ease and at your best? Try to bring that feeling to recruitment.

Hey!! I am first-gen greek and also a poc! My biggest advice is to be confident in yourself and your heritage! You are going to rush predominately white sororities, and the hard truth is that it can be really jarring be in this space. However, you are deserving to be apart of this community and experience just like any other PNM! Because think of it like this, if you aren’t confident in your identity now, what will happen when you are in a chapter and could possibly be the only POC in your pledge class (thats not likely but just think abt it)! I don’t say this to scare you at all because I promise you I felt the same exact way prior to recruitment! Your heritage and culture is an asset and apart of who you are! Be proud of it and dont be afraid to talk about your values!! I was definitely lost coming into recruitment. I definitely had no idea who I was and it took some time to figure things out and I feel embraced by my chapter! Take social media with a grain of salt! There are chapters with woc as members! Some are even in leadership/exec roles!! Sometimes they just arent on the social media and you might have better luck by looking on websites! This sounds a little crazy, but dont be afraid to look for other girls who are rushing who are poc and ask for their instagram! Recruitment is not just about finding your house but it is also about building connections in our community! Yes, it can be scary and there will be some chapters who will cut you without even talking to you but dont take it personally!! Appreciate the houses that want you just as much as you want them! Follow them all on instagram and follow the panhellenic page to see more of the community! If you see there is a poc in a chapter, give them a follow or message them!! It’ll be okay! There are so many woc in panhellenic that have found their home and I am sure would love to talk about their experience!
