letters of reccommendation for recruitment

Do the girls need letters of recommendation? The Panhellenic website says no. What do you think?

In my sorority rec letters aren't insanely helpful but are still useful, but some national groups will not allow a girl to pledge without one. They can only help so it's better to get them, but it's not life-or-death if you don't.
