is 22 too old?

by: Old Man

Due to some unfortunate events I'll starting college later than usual, and I'll be coming in as a freshman at 22 years of age. Would it be considered weird to rush a fraternity?

It really depends on your personality, what you're looking for in a chapter, what you're looking to get out of it, and how much you're willing to put up with. A little more info about yourself as well as answering these questions might help get a better answer

Well I'd say I was a very outgoing guy. I get along with pretty much everyone I meet and I love social events. My GPA is solid. I play soccer and I snowboard and I'm up for playing any kind of sport in general. As for what I'm looking for... I basically just want a social circle at college. I'll be quite some way away from home so I won't have all my boys around and I'd rather not sit at home every weekend. And when you say what I'm willing to put up with, do you mean immaturity from younger pledges?

Yea a big question I always ask older guys coming through rush is if they'll be comfortable being in a pledge class with guys that are 17/18 and usually getting bossed around by people that are still younger than you. How many years would you have left at FSU, because if it's 2 or less then that also hurts your chances a bit

I'd be starting as a freshman so I'll be there for the full four years. And I wouldn't really have much of a problem being bossed around by guys a few years younger than me. I understand how fraternities work so I'll be able to accept what happens. You could say I don't really have a big ego. And as for the younger guys in the pledge class... I actually have a friendship group that ranges from 18 to 25 so I'm used to it.

There's no harm in at least giving rush a shot. Pledging might be the real issue, the guys in your pledge class will be younger than you and they'll have different priorities. You might be bossed around by guys younger than you as well. Just go in and explain your circumstances, see if you click with a house, and go from there. Do you know any guys in any of the houses? Do you see yourself anywhere?

It all depends, but I know ATO has a brother that's like 26 because he was in the army or something

Not a big deal, a lot of chapters have guys that pledge when they are older--usually because they were in the military. Just don't come across as thinking that you're better than the other pledges because you have a few more years under your belt, but reading your responses you seem like an alright guy that wouldn't have a problem with this. Also, be prepared to be the first one your pledge brothers seek out when looking to buy alcohol.
