The definition of a legacy varies by sorority. All sororities accept the sister or daughter of an initiate in good standing. Many also accept granddaughters. Even fewer accept great-granddaughters, and maybe two accept nieces. But since recruitment is so huge, each house has a enough legacies going through recruitment to fill two or three pledge classes. So, in that sense, it doesn't help you very much. I don't know the legacy policies for all the houses, but it seems to be pretty similar across the board--legacy status gets you a courtesy invitation back to Philanthropy Round. After that, it's up to you to make it through to Preference Round. If you get preffed by your legacy house, you automatically appear at the top of the bid list. My younger sister and I are in the same sorority at different schools. She goes to a much smaller liberal arts school (maybe 6000 students total. Pledge classes are generally in the mid-thirties), and while they almost always have legacies going through recruitment, there's only maybe five each year. Legacy PNMs almost always get bids from their legacy house at my sister's school. That just isn't possible at Alabama.
