I don't think somebody would lie, but they might not really know for sure - like you don't know for sure, you only know about your sorority. Some groups may have pledged a lot of girls, but after a couple of weeks the ones who were in it and weren't really interested will have dropped out. Some may lose members from resignations. After Christmas break, there may be some who transfer, drop out, flunk...in short, there might be a few spots that open up.
