I'm a math major and it's about 70/30% on how my math and physics professors pronounce phi. Most use FEE as that is the proper greek pronunciation, and some use FYE (like eye) because it's the more common pronunciation in English. A quick google search suggests that Aphi went with FEE because it is more classical Greek and it sounds more feminine like FEEmale. I don't get the point of making up a story about Aphi screwing up the pronunciation since it's so easily disproved, and most of us actually learned this in our houses when we learned Greek letters. Both FEE and FYE are correct pronunciations.
