The overall devaluation of college education and mass promotion of collegiate partying/public glorification of Greek life. -A college degree/working hard in college isn't a guarantee of relative success anymore since everyone and anyone can go to college. Rounding out the experience and clinging to anything that represents an opportunity to perpetuate that experience (and possible reap benefits down the road via networking) is appealing. -"I'm Schmacked" "Old Row" "TFM" all pushed Greek life into young pop culture in a way that hadn't happened yet with social media. It made Greek more relevant and more appealing, but also brought in rushees for the wrong reasons. Arguably, these groups are a huge detriment to the longevity of Greek Life. Also-It's UA. They used to advertise the University with Greek Life and Bear Bryant. It's rarely been an "education first, fun second" type institution. 75% of the social activities and traditions on campus are built around Greek life. What is true at UA is not true of other institutions. The South tends to be 20-30 years behind U.S. Society in terms of priorities and mannerisms.
