For most sororities, the founding chapter (1st chapter ever) is designated the Alpha chapter (ChiO is a notable exception, with the founders choosing Psi as their founding chapter) Then the next chapters are designated by different Greek letters, usually in order (ex. 2nd chapter is Beta chapter, 3rd chapter is Gamma chapter, 4th chapter is Delta chapter, etc.). Some sororities do not do it this way though... I think some sororities allow chapters to choose their own letters instead of going in order. And Chi O went backwards in the Greek alphabet from Psi. Pi Phi has the state and then the letter designation (ex. AL-Alpha, AL-Beta, GA-Alpha, GA-Beta, etc.). Anyway Bama's SDT chapter is their Rho chapter, established in 1935. Considering that SDT founding chapter was established in 1917, their Rho chapter is one of their earliest chapters. And the fact that it has been operating continuously (without being closed) is notable too. Their nationals clearly wants to keep it going because it is an important chapter to them.
