Old alums and moms who went through in the 80s, 90s, and 00s when the machine became self important and out of control can't stand that theta has continues to thrive without sacrificing sisterhood and self respect. Their own houses made the weak decision to honor and obey even as things went off the rails with assaults, threats, coercion, and thug practices. Theta carried on without lowering themselves. The machine is nothing like that now and all they have is some botched SGA elections,homecoming, and myths and legends. Theta not only persisted but continues to recruit and retain girls who take leadership positions and are active all over campus. They are top quarter of the grade report and are reported to have a great sisterhood. They are friendly to everyone and well liked on the row. They did all this while the machine tried to make an example of them so the other houses stay in line. The bottom ranking is a threat to the others to do what we say or be bottom like theta. Problem is theta defies that and just keeps going. They get stronger every year because of their girls and their culture. All while keeping their self respect and sisterhood intact. I'm not a theta but I am here as my niece goes through rush. This struck a nerve. I was disgusted when my house turned on our sisterhood to follow the machine and have respected theta ever since. A few of us tried to get us to break away but fear of social retaliation kept our house in. Alums here will know which house I'm in and remember. It split our house and there are women who will defend the machine forever because it makes them feel like they are on the right side of this wrong. This includes keeping the party line that theta is bottom. They tell their daughters and it stays alive for another generation. I love that theta continues to give a little "bless your heart" to the ranks by recruiting great classes and being involved.
