Alums and actives can pass on personal knowledge about reputation issues (are you a bully? have you repeatedly gotten wasted and vomited on various people's lawns? are you a klepto? did you smuggle ivory into the US after a mission trip - not kidding I heard a no rec about this). These are the types of things that alums will mention in recs or tell actives about which will move you to the no invite list before recruitment even starts. If you don't have reputation issues, then chapters are excited to get to know you at IWT.
