Colonizing isn’t as much of a gamble as it used to be. Back when sigma kappa and alpha xi were on campus the first and second time, that was still waaaay before RFM was implemented. Houses could cut as many girls as they wanted and PNMs could also decline invitations, which led to top houses stringing girls along before a massive cut at the end, and almost all PNMs declining invites to lower houses because they thought they had a bid somewhere better. Lots of PNMs went bidless and it was almost impossible for lower house to recover. Luckily now that’s not an issue, which is why alpha phi and DG were successful. After two or three years the unobservant PNM can’t really tell the difference. Tldr back when chapters used to close a lot (pre 2000s) we used a different method of rush that was a lot more cutthroat, but that’s not an issue anymore
