I’ve found this is more true for fraternities than sororities. Usually sororities quickly convert colonies to chapters but maintak. A strong hands-on approach for the first few years. I’ve also not heard of a sorority colony failing in years, especially not at a huge school like Alabama. The decision to colonize at a place like this is a calculated one, and no sorority would invest the times, energy, and funds into one chapter unless they knew it would sustain itself and pay off in the long run. Otherwise they could certainly allocate all that money to helping other chapters or colonizing at several schools to spread out that risk.
