Here's how I see these two houses as a girl from another NR house: Alpha Phi is a house almost entirely based on appearances. Besides being a social house, Alpha Phi really doesn't bring anything to the table. And before you dislike my comment hear me out... Alpha Phi has been bottom in grades every year since their recolonization. They have poor retention. They have a poor reputation. And they don't always take girls of the highest character (evident in the fact that they dropped half their chapter). Despite all of this, Alpha Phi still had a draw. They were the perfect house for that far OOS PNM who was popular in high school and came to UA for the party scene (you know the type of girl I'm talking about... Blonde and skinny with 5 Cartier love bracelets on her wrist). This type of PNM didn't care about all the technicalities of houses like how some are OR and like how some are more involved. This type of PNM pledged Alpha Phi willingly because to have "hot" sisters was more important than having "real" sisters. Gamma Phi is nothing like this. Simply put, Gamma Phi just doesn't have the appeal Alpha Phi does. MAYBE in a few years Gamma Phi will continue to become more and more like Alpha Phi but as of right now the two houses really aren't that similar and appeal to different audiences. The type of party girl who pledges Alpha Phi does so willingly and happily. And the type of party girl who pledges Gamma Phi is usually choosing Gamma Phi from other really low ranked houses, if that makes any sense. Me and most other people on campus wouldn't clump Alpha Phi and Gamma Phi together. Alpha Phi and Zeta are more on par while Gamma Phi is more on par with DZ and AOPi. So to answer the original post, no I don't think that Gamma Phi is the new Alpha Phi. One or two pledge classes that were "better" than previous ones does not automatically bump a house up... And that's a general rule that goes for all houses. You need to also realize that Gamma Phi's '17 PC was cuter than previous ones but they also took a lot of grade and reputation risks... And that's a tradeoff all lower ranked houses HAVE to make... A lower ranked house can either take average looking girls with good grades and good involvement (like what Theta and DG do) or they can take cuter looking girls with poorer grades/involvement who pose more risk (like what Gamma Phi and DZ do).
