In my house, there are elections once a year (at the end of fall semester) to change the cabinets. And, at least in my house, almost all positions are secured through elections. And there were quite a few second semester freshman who won positions after the elections. There are obviously other "leadership" roles such as the t shirt chair and the Panhellenic rep which are given to those based on applications with no elections being held. If you want a leadership position while you're a first semester freshman it really just comes down to whether or not your house has any positions open, which they usually don't if I'm being honest. I knew one girl who rushed last year and she ended up filling in for an exec position but to get that kind of opportunity is generally pretty rare. During rush you should definitely let the houses know that you are very interested in obtaining a position in the future. There's really no wrong way you could go about it, just be open and don't be super pushy. Also, you don't necessarily need a leadership position to make new friends and meet people. Once you accept a bid, you gain literally 400 sisters with about 150 girls just in your pledge class. Meeting new people will not be a struggle.
