Ok the idea of charging for recs is ludicrous but I don't really get why people are being so holier than thou about it. As a Pnm getting recs for every house is hard and stressful. I remember contacting friends of friends of family friends from like church, pretty much strangers, and meeting them for lunch or getting interviewed over the phone about my resume so they could write me a rec. I mean we all have personally asked for rec letters from alumnae we didnt personally know, or at least know of girls who did this during rush. It happens all the time, I don't know why folks are pretending like it doesn't.
