<strong>Subject:</strong><br />thoughts on "scholarship girls"<br /><br /> Poster Message:
There was a post on the wealth thread that brings up a misconception that many have about the UA scholarships. The poster wrote that there are wealthy girls and also those on scholarship in all of the houses. This was written as if the scholarship girls would not be able to affort UA without. I was shocked to arrive at UA and find out that so many of us in the honors college who are on full ride are thought of as poor. My sisters believe this and it seems many on here do as well. From my experience that is FAR from true. I know many kids on the bama full ride and they all have plenty of money and even better, no debt. Every girl in my suite was on the full scholarship and each of us comes from wealthy or at least upper middle class families with large incomes and larger generational wealth, holdings, and savings. We all had the $ to go elsewhere but chose Alabama much the same way many others choose a school. That they were going to make it basically free to attend was certainly a benefit, not because we needed that but because what it will provide us going forward. We all have huge amounts of money left over for graduate school or med. school, downpayments for houses, and full funding for our weddings and future lives. We will be starting off debt free and the experience of moving for school broadens our hiring potential by broadening our network. This leaves us money for supporting our houses and sisterhood. Did this thought of financial liability because of being on scholarship hurt girls during rush? I think it does. I am in a top house,a legacy, but my RMs and friends from rush are in lower OOS and bottom houses. I couldn't figure out why. They are pretty, smart, normal, friendly and seems like there must have been something that kept them out of middle houses and up.
