In the "so-called" wealthy enclaves within the state of Alabama, if you want to belong and be treated equally at the country clubs you must be a member of certain "Old Row" fraternities and sororities. The old guard will do anything to maintain this perception. When "Old Row" was really the elite of the elite has long passed, but they will fight tooth and nail to avoid facing that reality. The demographics of the University have dramatically changed over the past decade and the power and prestige of "Old Row" sororities and fraternities just doesn't hold water outside of Alabama. In many cases "New Row" sororities and fraternities are much more prestigious throughout the USA.
