You should encourage her to do what will make her happy. Yes, on the outside sororities look amazing...The pretty instas of all the sisters, the parties, the connections. But not everything glitters is gold. You should remind her that a house that dropped her solely because of her appearance is a house she should NOT want. Period. I know that sororities take appearances into consideration, some more so than others, but at the end of the day a house that turns a girl away just because of her appearance is disgusting and NO ONE should want to be a part of that. If this girl is already trying to change herself just to "fit an image" then I can guarantee her time in a sorority will not be fun because she's always going to feel inadequate. My advice: Encourage her to find happiness in herself. Sororities DO NOT validate anyone... They don't make certain people more important than others, they don't hold any real status, they don't guarantee any sort of happiness. Encourage her to have a great freshman year regardless of the fact she's not in a sorority. And if she does choose to lose weight, PLEASE keep an eye on her because his is exactly how eating disorders start. It's very clear she's upset about not being in a sorority so be a friend for her.
