I would say no recommendation letters. Let alone reaching out before the May 1 contact deadline. And no preconceived ideas. "Just showing up" and seeing where it takes you limits the options for "top" houses. Agree, it's not because some of these girls aren't great, they just didn't "play the game". (I know that sounds harsh, but don't know how else to say it). its easy for those types to be passed over by top houses even if they have perfect resumes. Some houses require rec letters or you are dropped after IWT. Despite great credentials these girls can have fewer options.
