I grew up in the DC Suburbs, and I assure you that there are a ton of 'poor' areas, the closer to DC you get in Alexandria, and some of the richest people I knew lived in the far suburbs with long commutes to work. Most people want LAND, and that is where you find it. Not everywhere is New York or LA where everyone wants to live in the City. My dad works in DC and we lived pretty far out. He takes the metro to work and the trade off is that we have land, horses, a pool and no one would consider us poor.
