@yes if you google "university of alabama machine" you will get a lot of very helpful and extensive information that is probably more accurate than anything you'll get here! i especially recommend The Bitter Southerner's profile on Elliot Spillers and stuff the Crimson White has written because all of that is by UA students that understand our campus climate. basically some frats are not part of the machine and don't necessarily vote/campaign for the machine backed campus. for one reason or another Theta has never been affiliated with the machine and they are the only sorority with that distinction. While various houses have, throughout history, come out in support of independent candidates, that is very rare and they usually end up facing some sort of penalty for it from the machine frats.
