Plenty of people instinctively "cluster up" with people from their hometown or home state, especially during their first semester or two when everything is new and overwhelming. If you are from NJ or CA you are more likely to seek out the other NJ or CA girls in your house, because the in-state girls aren't dealing with the same homesickness or culture shock you are. And plenty of in-state girls want to preserve relationships with their friends from high school that they know will be living in Birmingham after college ends (hello, KD.) I think OP should definitely branch out and meet people from as many different places as possible, but I also think it's not uncommon for nervous freshmen to seek out what is familiar to them geographically as they make the transition to college. Just a thought.
