U of AL has made a concentrated effort in the last few years to recruit academically-talented high school seniors from across the country, many from the Midwest. I can speak for prestigious Chicago-area schools, and I know SEVERAL students who could have gotten into any excellent Midwest college who went to AL because of the scholarship $$$. So don't discount AL academics. While nobody was apparently looking, they have become strong in many academic areas. And once there, many OOS students do enjoy the "Southern perks" like football and Greek Life, but those alone are NOT the only draw for many OOS students.
