At a University like Alabama, the Board of Trustees are very supportive of celebrating UA's Antebellum history. ADPhi may have only been on campus for the brief period between GLO's starting at UA (DKE, 1847) and the school banning them before the Civil War (1859), but it was still the second GLO at UA (and is still the oldest national fraternity at UA). It's also worth knowing that several of the original ADPhi's served and died in the Civil War, or went off and became distinguished individuals in Alabama and the US (imagine an Alabama without Justice Somerville). ADPhi is the only Antebellum fraternity to not be housed (and a southern, traditionally minded BoT recognizes that). For Alpha Sig, there is a contemporary history with them being housed where Friedman Hall presently is. They were founded in 1925 during the fraternity rush at UA, had periodic times of inactivity and low membership but were relatively stable. Nonetheless they left the University in 1970 when the house burned down and the membership dwindled, the alumni nor the University stepped in to save them so they remained inactive until recent. Longer history, but at UA length=/=importance when things like the Civil War come into play. Really, it comes down to money. Whoever can best rally their national organization (due to lack of local alumni) and it's alumni to cover the cost of a frat-in-the-box, will get it when one opens.
