I think that it is common for the parents to show up on the lawn that their daughter ranked first after pref. If their daughter gets their second or third choice, then the daughter texts the mom real quick with which house she got and the mom moves lawns. Either that or they just show up to bid day and don't head to a house yet until their daughter opens her card and texts her. As for wearing a certain sororities colors...they could either just be banking on the daughters 1st choice, or the daughter is a legacy to that sorority and it is one of the ones that puts legacies at the top of the bid list that make it to pref, they could have been told before they got dressed that morning that their daughter had a bid, etc.
