Most want you to live in the house or have a rule about it. However, usually the house fills up so although you "have to," you can get out of it if you own a house/property or if it fills up too soon. Usually everyone pays dues that go towards house funds whether you live there or not since everyone uses it (cheaper and not same as house rent. If you are a sophomore you will most likely still be obligated. The obligation to live in the house doesn't usually end until you are a junior or senior. I rushed as a sophomore and lived there as a junior.
