A&M's "top tier" is not old money like it is at a lot of other schools. They lack the sound confidence that comes from being a true elite and are afraid of losing whatever tiny bit of prestige/social class they cling to. It's the age old new money vs old money feud, and A&M is very new money. (If monied at all) Most the guys and girls in top fraternities/sororities here are upper middle class at best (yes, Fiji, Kappa, Tri Delt are all mostly middle class no matter what image they try to portray) and just grew up in super entitled WASPy middle class neighborhoods: the kind of places where everyone is always comparing themselves to each other and trying to one-up their neighbor out of insecurity. This mentality follows them into college and probably only gets worse when they realize they're not special and "daddy" is just a regular old dude with a decent job like everyone else. These are the people that get so hateful about "tier" and "popularity." How else do you convince yourself you're better than others? Like the person above said, some will grow out of it. I personally think it's a much bigger problem with sororities than fraternities here
