It's because in college some people still haven't discovered their self worth which is sadly still wrapped up in their parents wealth and where they came from while others have become confident in who they actually are themselves. Don't worry, age takes care of this to a great extent as people must stand on their own. The nastiness comes from fear of losing prestige so they lash out against other groups in order to prop up their own stature. You will see which groups fight so hard to be "top".
