The recruitment process is designed to give a bid to as many pnm's as possible and maintain membership equity among the chapters, not to get rid of pnm's. There is not a predetermined number of spots set at the beginning and the number of pnm's going through does not matter, everything is percentage based. The more pnm's going to pref means more bids. In 'normal' rush, the releases each round are always heaviest from the stronger recruiting sororities because they can count on carrying a high percentage of the pnm's they want from round to round. The stronger recruiting chapters have fewer pnm's at every round, starting with very heavy first round cuts, and this continues to trickle all the way down to the pref round. The purpose is to let pnm's know as soon as possible where they have and don't have chances for a bid so they can focus on the houses that are actually interested in them. All sororities have the same Quota at the end but some sororities will take more than Quota to guarantee every pnm who sticks with it to the end gets a bid (all pnm's are guaranteed a bid if they put both their pref houses on their MRABA card, or just the one if that's all they have at pref). What you are talking about is Variable Quota, and all this is still true but with even heavier cuts from stronger recruiting chapters at all rounds and lower Quotas for them at the end as well, but with the same bid guarantees for pnm's who rank both pref houses. The first round cuts from each sorority are decided over the summer, before you come to campus, before you watch the chapter videos, before you turn in your ranks for Philanthropy. It's all based on pnm's grades, resume, videos, social media, and any connections they have with members. You watch the chapter videos on Greek Day and rank the chapters but where you are invited for Philanthropy was already decided. This is why you should not get your heart set on any chapters before recruitment. PNM'S SHOULD WAIT UNTIL THEY GET THEIR PHILANTHROPY SCHEDULE TO SEE WHERE THEY WILL ACTUALLY BE RUSHING. Your ranks do not get you invited back to a chapter at any round; the sororities don't see them and therefore don't use them to make their lists. Your ranks only come into play if you would receive more invitations than a round allows, so your low ones would drop off your schedule. Otherwise, you go to as many chapters as possible no matter how low you rank them. Each chapter is given a maximum amount of pnm's they can invite back to each round. It is all a numbers game. Sororities have to cut a lot of girls that they would love to meet or loved in person, but it's a chapter decision and they have to adhere to the numbers they are given. Cuts are not personal and when you do get cut remember that you didn't do anything wrong and it's not because they didn't like you. It's just numbers.
