Their whole existence??? LOL Obviously you are new to the entire concept of greek life. You would have a hard time finding many, if any, sorority members who joined so they can support a sorority's philanthropy. Sororities don't exist to be fundraising arms for other orgs, if that's what you want there are plenty of those groups. Saying that sororities' whole existence is based on philanthropy is like saying Home Depot's whole existence is based on their support for Habitat for Humanity. Sure, that's their big corporate philanthropy and they are a major sponsor and do a lot for them, but it's not why they exist. You wouldn't decide you want to go to work for Home Depot because of their philanthropy, you want a job and work life that fits with your skill set and career goals. And you don't buy stuff from them to support their philanthropy, you do that because they have what you need. You join a sorority to find friendship and a home away from home and a support system with like-minded women, so you try to find one based on that where your vibe fits the vibe of the members. Sororities were founded and exist to serve their members, college women. Which philanthropy any of them happen to support is incidental.
