Outside of my fraternity, I made the most friends by talking to people that were in my classes. You already have one topic to talk about, so the ice is broken. You can share notes, study together, go for a drink/pizza after a test, whatever. There are tons of clubs, join one about something that you are interested in. Bartending jobs are hard to get, and you probably won't make many friends in other jobs. So I would not get a job to make friends. Volunteering is also a great way to meet people. Remember though - it is up to you to be open and friendly, it won't just fall in your lap. Friendships take effort. The fact that you expressed interest is already a good first step. I think most people at UofI are pretty friendly and laid back, so you should be fine. Good luck!
