Recent grad here so I'll try to help. Some of my closest friends were people not in the greek system. The reality is that yeah, most greeks tend to hang out with other greeks, but it's easy to make friends in classes, clubs, wherever you work, etc. "Block" is just when bars host a private tailgate for a few hours and then open it to the public. "Senior Block" is a private tailgate at Sigma Chi's senior house. It's fun but people definitely overhype it on this site. Bartending is a great way to meet people, both in houses and not in houses. My advice: don't feel like you're missing out. Just go out and make friends and do what comes naturally. If you'd like to hit up the bars, then ask around and find a group of like-minded people that will do the same. Enjoy the rest of your time at UIUC!
