SEC and other large public universities constantly need to justify Greek life. The houses are palatial on some campuses and take up a lot of real estate, often with financial assistance from the universities. Behavior is often out of hand on a large scale with SA and substance abuse and hazing. Many fraternities don't have a chapter GPA above the all men's average or even a 3.0. And sororities and fraternities are always accused of being elitist, exclusionary, and highly favored as a whole system. When a lot of students go to a school mainly for football and greeklife, and can actually get in with a high school GPA of 2.8, the school needs to make SOME kind of statement of accountability. That's why many have publicly available scorecards.
