Subject:
wanting to drop sorority as a result of leadership

Poster Message:
I am a freshman here at UF who is a new member of a middle tier sorority. I am not sure how the classifications of tiers work and their relevance, but it does seem prevalent as far as the opinions of my sorority's executive board and leadership decisions. When I was first joined, I was excited to be apart of what I considered a fantastic organization with down to earth girls that were genuine (cliche I know). However, through the past month and a half I've started to realize the intentions behind the majority of the girls here and it's honestly just not okay. Our chapter meetings focus on comparisons to more 'known' chapters and are constantly talking about social media, presets, the type of poses that look good, etc. Our events, including ones that we have to generate points for and should be a reward for active members, cater specifically towards male interests and we are consistently encouraged to bring fraternity members and often times encouraged to bring men from certain 'top tier' chapters. There never seems to be a resting moment and we are doing an excess of philanthropy events, fundraising and date functions just to be 'more seen around campus.' when discussing Dance Marathon, rather than saying that we should raise money for the cause and increase our pool of fundraising for a positive reason, we were yelled at for being 'lower in total donations than the majority of other sororities.' Everything ties back into being facey rather than appreciating the real nature of the women in our chapter. Already, my pc is being groomed for spring recruitment despite not even being initiated. Instead of being welcomed and starting something positive, I feel like I'm a tool in a scheme to roll out pledge class after pledge class and 'move up the ranks' or be more like 'top tier houses.' To be quite honest, I doubt the top tiers will be changing anytime soon and I don't think we have the influence, resources or historical value to reach that point. It especially won't happen within my four years here, and it sucks to know that I might not be able to have my best time because I'm being forced to create a 'better' future reputation. UF Greek life is awesome and the majority of the houses here, regardless of tier, are incredible... so why be so obsessed over changing or 'revamping?' I haven't seen this opinion or experience through many of my other friends in other sororities and I feel so unlucky. Should I drop?
